Pan-fried
Oyster Cake is delectable, not oily, really pan-fried, but not deep
fried in oil. Tapioca (potato powder) is mixed with egg sauce and
oysters before they are pan-fried. If tapioca is used and the cake is pan-fried, we can regard this restaurant serving original Chiu Chow food.
Fried Kale w/ Dried Fish $56 is the first dish serving to us and has a
mouth-watering smell. This gives us a positive impression to this
restaurant, in the very beginning.
Deep-fried Taro w/ Duck Meat $58 is palatable too. Taro is tender and
not oily, as the chili leaves underneath have absorbed the oil.
Marinated Sliced Goose Meat & Liver $108. The liver is tender
and not dry as those in other Chiu Chow restaurants, there are totally 6
pieces only. Overall taste is good and not salty. This is the signature
dish.
Steamed Eel w/ Plum Paste is quite refreshing, with a bit sweet &
sour taste. Fish meat is tender and freshly killed, impling that the eel
is not frozen and killed in the morning.
Sugar & Vinegar Noodles is tasty and not oily. Nowadays,
old-fashioned Chinese restaurants, like Chiu Chow Chuen, also upgrade
themselves by adding less oil in cooking foods.
Chiu
Chow Rice Dumpling $16 (2 pieces). The rice is mixed with five spice
powder before it is boiled. We also find salted egg yolk, red bean
paste, and pork inside. The boss of Chiu Chow Chuen informs us booking
in advance for this dumpling is a must before Dragon Boat Festival. You are suggested to try.
Steamed Sweet Dumplings is very hot when served.
Steamed Sweet Taro is slightly too sweet. If not, it is not original.
To order one piece for the whole table to share is enough and
recommended.

Remarks: Chiu Chow Chuen is in fact a small Chinese restaurant serving Chiu Chow cuisine. It is suggested to book in advance.
Chiu
Chow Chuen (CCC) has a long history in Causeway Bay. It was originally
located in Lockhart Road. The CCC's layout is quite strange and a
significant portion is reserved as kitchen, resulting that comfortable
dining environment is not available for most of the tables .
This drawback can be compensated by its quality food. Servers (waitress
and waiter) should have been working in CCC for many years or they may
be partners, their service is at most average (except a man of about
60yo, he should be the owner.).
We
order 7 dishes and 3 desserts, the bill is $580 (average per head
$116). Though there are totally 10 items, food portion is standard only,
this meal is just sufficient to us. In view of food taste and quality,
it is surely
value for money. Foods are of typical original Chiu Chow style. The
owner also gives suggestion of what to order and explains their Chiu
Chow food history to us. We intentionally order fewer dishes beforehand,
and would like to try more Chiu Chow desserts at the end. We are quite satisfied with the dinner tonight.
