Chun Yuen Prawn Shop has been built for more than two hundred years by a Yuen Long gentry - Mr. Tang Lim Ming (鄧廉明). It has been listed as Grade I History Building by the Antiquities and Monuments Office of Hong Kong.
It is the existing oldest prawn shop in Hong Kong. It was a contruction of Late Ming Dynasty / Early Qing Dynasty. Before Hong
Kong was opened for trade, Chun Yuen Prawn Shop was still in business. But
after the Second World War, it closed.
Under the signage Chun Yuen Prawn
(晉源押), there should be a couplet 「晉饒萬寶、源匯百川」. Its meaning is to "accept
/ receive all valuable treasures, like a river", since it is a prawn
shop. Its roof is inlaid with carved ceramics, preserving the original
appearance of ancient construction.
The wall was made of blue bricks.
Three steps at the entrance were granite.
A signage with bat and coin in the form of bottle gourd cannot be found at the time of photo-taking.
It has an implied meaning that money will enter the shop immediately.
