Free radicals are molecules or atoms with an unstable electronic structure. Because they are missing an electron, they are very reactive and prone to chemical reactions with other molecules. In the human body, free radicals can be generated by normal metabolic processes, or they can increase due to external factors such as ultraviolet rays, pollution, smoking, etc.
Free radicals are beneficial to the human body in appropriate amounts, for example by participating in immune responses and signaling. However, too many free radicals can attack the lipids, proteins and DNA of cells, causing cell damage, which can lead to aging and various diseases. Usually, when it comes to free radicals, it is said that they are the main cause of disease and aging.
