Tai Wong Kung (大王宮)
Location and History
Tai Wong Kung is situated at the seaside slope between Ap Lei Chau Estate and South Horizons. Historical records indicate that the temple already existed in 1912. A stele beside the temple shows that it was renovated in 1983. In 1997, a pier was built in front of the temple, allowing worshippers to arrive by sea. The temple mainly worships Marshal Chiu Kung Ming, who was highly respected and honored with the title of Tai Wong Ye.
Overall Setting
Facing the East Lamma Channel, Tai Wong Kung stands along the main route to and from the typhoon shelter, making it convenient for fishermen to worship and pray for safety before setting out to sea. On the right side of the temple is a stele recording the reconstruction, beside a large tree. In front of the tree stands another stele commemorating the construction of the pier. On the left side of the temple is a pavilion, refurbished in 1968 by the Ap Lei Chau Kai Fong Tung Hing Association. Next to the pavilion is a red rectangular shelf displaying dozens of deity statues.
Architectural Characteristics
The temple consists of a single hall with a subsidiary building on the left. Its structure is simple, with minimal ornamentation. Above the main entrance hangs a plaque inscribed in gold paint with the words “Tai Wong Kung.” On both sides are couplets expressing the respect and gratitude of Ap Lei Chau residents toward Tai Wong Ye. Inside the main hall, a red altar and an offering table are placed for worship.
