Mingun and Parade @ Myanmar

Mingun, located on the western bank of Ayeyarwaddy River and famous for several pagodas, is about seven miles upriver from Mandalay and good for a one-day trip. It is accessible by boat and vehicle. It is quite funny that we miss the only boat from Mandalay jetty in the morning, we have to hire a vehicle at a much higher price.

This is the main road in Mingun, it is like Nathan Road in Hong Kong. There are stalls on one side, selling souvenirs and fruits.

Myatheindan Pagoda (also known as Hsinbyume Paya), being one of the most important relics in Mingun, was badly damaged in 1838 by earthquake and it was restored in 1874. It is particularly impressive under sunlight.

This is the top level of the seven whitewashed wavy terraces. It was built 136 years ago and most parts are still in good condition.

Souvenirs including paintings, drawings, T-shirt, sculptures and key-ring are commonly available. An impression to me is that those paintings and drawings are more or less similar in different attractions, they may / should be produced in factories or schools.

This large rock is in fact called Mingun Paya (Mingun Pagoda). Construction began in 1790 and halted in 1819. Original height is 500 feet, it is now only 162 feet. The Paya (Pagoda) was therefore left unfinished. We must go barefoot from the bottom to the top. During day-time, it is like pan-frying our feet on the hot rock surface.

From the top of Mingun Paya (the large rock in the photo above), we can see Mingun Bell in front of the white Myatheindan Pagoda.

When we turn to the direction at 15:00, we can see River Ayeyawaddy. Though the scenery is not particularly spectacular, it is the view the King would like to see 200 years ago.

If not because we miss the only boat from Mandalay jetty in the morning, we cannot meet this wonderful parade in Mingun. We are therefore too lucky to have missed the boat and met a parade today. It should be like a Children Festival. It is a bonus in our trip.

When the child is old enough, it would ride on the horse by itself.

The ladies are dressed-up.

The girls are dressed in colourful skirt.

The weather is too hot today, the child has no facial expression.

Many people participate in the parade. The whole parade lasts for about two hours.
