Historical Sites in & near Bangkok
Apart
from shopping and eating, it is needed to visit some historical sites in
Bangkok. There are still some good places which are worthwhile to make a
short trip.
Wat
Arun (Temple of Dawn), located on the west side of Chao Praya River(it
runs through Bangkok city), is one of Bangkok's most famous landmarks
and just next to Wat Arun Pier.
Wat Arun is open from 0830 to 1730. Admission is 50 Baht for foreigner.
It
is in late afteroon, there is still sunlight. It is beautifully
decorated with tiny pieces of coloured glass and Chinese porcelain
placed delicately into intricate patterns.
It is from another angle. To me, to have a look of the appearance is already enough.
'Wat
Phu Khao Thong' is white in colour, this colour is not common for
temple in Thailand. It takes about one hour by vehicle from Bangkok city
centre.
This
(The Buddha Head in Wat Mahathat) is a very important relic of
Ayutthaya Historical Park. This Park is declared a UNESCOWorld
heritagesite in 1981. More information can be found in link of Ayutthaya
Kingdom. It is too precious, to an extent that security personnel and
iron railing are needed.
The head is entrapped in the roots of a Bodhi (Banyan) tree, but the body is gone.
From this angle, we have a better knowledge of how the head is entrapped.
This is a picture 'borrowed' from a magazine. This picture is taken after the disastrous water flood in Thailand.
Such pagoda is very common in Thailand and other South East Asian countries.
