Tamahide is famous for its OYAKO DONBURI (a combination of boiled chicken and scrambled egg over a bowl of rice), which is still a very poplar meal among the Japanese people. Now, Tamahide is being run by its seventh generations from its founder (founded in 1760). And this year (2006) marks the restaurant's 246th anniversary.
This restaurant is easily accessible by Metro. I order a Yen1,500 set; it is a bowl of rice with chicken meat and egg paste. There is also a fresh egg on the top. The first feeling is that it is too delicious. The food is not too hot, the rice is boiled in the best condition and good timing, and the result is that the whole bowl of rice is really very delicious.
The bowl is about 7 inches in diameter. The egg paste around chicken meat has just been fully cooked and the feeling is that it is not dry, but juicy. The chicken should be prepared by absorbing some sauces; the taste is already the best. Besides the chicken egg rice, there is Japanese salad in small plate, a cup of cold tea, and a cup of hot (light chicken taste) soup.
The young couple of about 30 years old sitting opposite to me also ordered similar ones at Yen 1,300. Their first phrase after they put the food into their months is both “Oishii (tasty)”. The man opposite to me ordered the soup again has to pay additional Yen100. The soup is a chicken soup with some green onion.
I would visit this restaurant again. Though I need to wait for 60 minutes
outside the restaurant and the total eating time is only 20 minutes, next time, I would arrive at 11:00. There is a Japanese lady who can speak in very simple English, and she would recommend the most expensive one (Yen 1,500).
