A
standard dish of Char Siu $80 is of alluring cha siu red colour. A
shiny honey sauce is on the surface. Totally there are 14 pieces and
each has about 1 cm in thickness. It is the signature dish in Canton
Room, Luk Kwok Hotel .
Vegetable in Chicken Soup $78 should have a value of $50 at most.
Fried Rice in Dry Scallop and Egg White $108 can be divided into 4
small bowls. There is plenty of dry scallop and the rice has the flavour
of chicken soup and ginger juice.
Antipasto $18

Magazines
always introduce Luk Kwok's Char Siu (Chinese BBQ Pork) to be one of
the best in town. I have the intention to try for a long time and expect
it is of very high quality. In addition, Canton Room is in Luk Kwok ( which
has a long history in Hong Kong and I attended Wedding dinners of
relatives when I was very young), there should be a guarantee of quality
and taste. Tonight we arrive Luk Kwok before the dinnertime; there are
not many customers. Since Canton Room is a restaurant in a hotel, the tables are not densely aligned. Light
music is broadcasted. If you specifically request to have a table near
the window in advance, you may oversee the view in Gloucester Road.
We of course order a standard dish of Char Siu $80, Vegetable in
Chicken Soup $78, and a plate of "Fried Rice in Dry Scallop and Egg
White $108". The bill is $341 (average per head $170).
Char
Siu is well displayed. There are totally 14 pieces, which are about 1
cm in thickness. Appearance is attractive and it is in Char Siu red
color. There is enough amount of shiny Char Siu honey sauce on the
surface. Besides, small amount of
fat is still stuck on the pork; this is the type of Char Siu I like
most. Everything is alright. When a piece of warm Char Siu is put into
the month, only a feeling of deliciousness comes into my mind. However, I
really
do not want to say it is a little bit salty than it should be. If it is
not because of this point, it can have a score of 90. Now it is only
65. I do not accept that a renowned Char Siu in Luk Kwok is a bit salty at such price. No excuse would be accepted. We
are a bit disappointed. The standard should be maintained at high level
no matter when it is served to diners.
In "Vegetable in Chicken Soup", there are several strips of Chinese
ham on the surface. Though it is priced at $78, the quality and taste
should be equal to $50 at most. Vegetable is not young enough.
"Fried
Rice in Dry Scallop and Egg White" is nicely displayed is a plate of
special shape. There is plenty of dry scallop. The rice has soaked
chicken soup and ginger juice. It can be divided into 4 small bowls and
should be the best item in the dinner.
Overall
performance is lower than what is mentioned in magazines. Maybe, the
magazines would like to write in such manner to attract the readers.
Apart from the above 3 items, we do not know whether other items are
good. Frankly speaking, we guess the standard of other items should not be too bad or should be quite high.
When we pay by Hang Seng Card, the amount becomes $294.5 only. We
finally realize that there is 15% discount for payment by Hang Seng
Card. We save up about $50. This should be compensation to us, maybe.
In
view of the Char Siu I have tried so far, that from Joy Hing, Wanchai should be the most
delicious one in aspects of taste and price,
though some people do not think so. In King of the King Restaurant in
Central, it even
claims its average quality Char Siu to be the King.
