Auhai Chicken Farm Restaurant is a very local style restaurant in the suburb of Panyu.
Auhai from another angle.
Braised Chicken in Pot 農家雞 is one of the signature chickens. The meat
is rich in chicken flavor, and is fresh and bouncy. There is no surplus
oil under the skin.
Fried Potato Cake is not available daily. We are lucky to have a try. It is fresh and tasty but not too special.
Chicken Blood In Black Pepper Soup 胡椒浸雞血 RMB15 is a new food
combination to us. Though the display is not attractive, we finish the
whole pot in short. The soup is surely rich in black pepper flavor.
Pan-fried Green Pepper Stuffed w/ Fish Meat 釀青椒 is not too peculiar. You all are familiar with this dish.
Steamed
Pond Fish w/ Preserved Olive 欖角蒸邊魚. This pond fish is fresh; meat is
sweet and fragrant. Together with preserved olive and soya sauce, the
taste is further enhanced. Of course, the meat texture cannot be
compared with that of grouper from the sea.
Stewed Pork w/ Potato 深薯炆火腩 is a dish we like, mainly because potato,
pork and preserved bean sauce match perfectly. It is suggested to eat
plain rice together with the brown sauce.
Stir-fried Green Vegetable 油炒菜
Tian Di No.1 天地一號 is in fact a vinegar drink. It is sweet and sour,
and quite refreshing. It is a popular drink among the locals.
This map should be clear to local drivers.

We
have a short trip to Panyu (番禺) this time. Apart from being a
relaxation from the hustle and bustle in Hong Kong, to eat is of course
the mission. It is well known that the foods in Guangdong are original,
tasty and at very low price (in comparison with the price level in Hong Kong). We
therefore specifically visit Panyu to try Guangdong farmhouse cuisine
(農家菜).
Auhai
is located in the suburb, but not in Panyu city. An MPV hired
beforehand takes us to and fro in Panyu. There is no beautiful
decoration, the restaurant is in fact a typical restaurant in the
countryside. It is a quite big restaurant and should be able to accommodate 300 diners at the same time. When we
arrive at the restaurant for dinner, there are not many diners. But
suddenly, it is full. It should be restaurant with word of month in the
vicinity.
We
have ordered 12 dishes (some of them have not been shown); the bill is
RMB310 (average per head RMB50). The food materials we order are also
those commonly available in Hong Kong, namely chicken, duck, pork, fish,
egg and
vegetable. The main difference is the cooking method; fresh food
materials from the farm are selected. Food taste and quality should be
good and above average in Panyu. But to me, it is average only in all
aspects. Some food materials, like fresh local chicken and fish, must not be available in Hong Kong.
It is of course a valuable experience to try farmhouse cuisine in
Panyu. If there is such chance again, we must visit again, irrespective
the comparatively longer traveling time.
