This is a male toilet, at Junction of Wellington Street & Queen’s Road Central.
It was constructed in 1913. It is ninety one years old in 2014. It is the only underground (below ground level) male toilet in Hong Kong.
In the past, female were not advised to go out, there were not many female underground toilets. The construction of underground toilets in the 19th century was to ensure that disgusting toilets were not on the ground level. But there were not many good methods to discharge excrements. It was needed to take away the excrements manually. Toilet ventilation had not been considered at that moment, resulting that underground toilet was a source of disgusting and unpleasant smell. Public hygiene could not be improved. Thereafter, there were less underground toilets. In 2000s, the facilities of this Wellington Street underground toilet have been improved and the toilet is still opened to the public.
