Portland Street, parallel to Nathan Road (彌敦道), is a
street in Mongkok, Kowloon. It connects Man Ming Lane (文明里) in Yaumatei
and Bute Street (弼街) in Mongkok. Portland Street is a traditional and
famous red-light district in Hong Kong.
Langham Place and a lot of restaurants can be found in this street. Except for a few small parks, the entire two-lane street is highly urbanized with dense pedestrian and motor traffic throughout most of the day.
Day time of Portland Street is not too special, it is
anyway a normal street in the urban area. At night, because of neon
lights of night clubs and eateries, it becomes very beautiful and looks
like a lady with heavy markup. It is bright, charming and amazing.
This neon light picture is very peculiar in Hong Kong. It represents the night life of Hong Kong.
This scene will fade out in the course of time, if the old buildings are demolished. Since new buildings for safety sake and better outlook, it is not planned and allowed to hang heavy signage on the outer wall.
