The Hong Kong Museum of History was established in July 1975 when the City Museum and Art Gallery was split into the Hong Kong Museum of History and Hong Kong Museum of Art. But some of the Museum's collections date back to the City Museum and Art Gallery founded in 1962 at the City Hall. In 1983, the Museum was moved to the temporary accommodation in Kowloon Park. It was moved to its present premises on Chatham Road South, Tsim Sha Tsui in 1998. The Hong Kong Museum of History, with a gross floor area of 17,500 square meters, is constructed at a cost of HK$390M.

“The Hong Kong Story” should be the very meaningful, educational and entertaining to most visitors to know more about Hong Kong. It includes eight parts, displaying over 4,000 exhibits about Hong Kong historical and cultural heritage.

The most impressive parts to me include Folk Culture in Hong Kong, Birth & Early Growth of the City, and Japanese Occupation. It is time-saving, interesting and fruitful to see so many valuable and retrospective stuffs in a visit. Time needed is suggested to be 2 - 4 hours.

Besides the above The Hong Kong Story, there are regularly other exhibitions of smaller scale, like Hong Kong’s Cheongsam Culture (香港長衫), and Photos of Old Hong Kong (香港舊照片), depending on the time of your visit and luck. Hong Kong Museum of History
