Tai Wo Tong has been operating in Kowloon City for nearly seventy years in 2014. It was originally a traditional Chinese physician on the second floor, while the ground floor remains a retailer of Chinese herbs, patent herbal medicine and soup material pack. In the fifties and the sixties, western doctors had not been widely accepted by citizens. Similar to other Chinese herbalists, it was the glorious period of Tai Wo Tong. Many patients were queuing up for consultation.
There is still a signage written ‘世醫鍾伯明’ (Chinese Herbalist Chung Pak Ming). Both Mr. Chung Pak Ming and his son, Mr. Chung Fuk Li (鍾福利), passed away. There is no Chinese herbalist to provide consultation service any more. The present PIC is Mr. Kwok who was the former manager and shopkeeper of Tai Wo Tong.
Tai Wo Tong was on the ground floor of an old building, which is of three storeys and with arcade at the front. This should be the traditional Guangdong construction in the thirties or the forties. Red Chinese characters on white background are written on the two pillars in front of the shop. The shop is mainly in dark brown colour and its decoration gives me an impression it should be the species of the fifties or the sixties. Anyway, it is an old Chinese herbal shop in Kowloon City. There is high probability that it will disappear suddenly because of urban redevelopment or other reasons.
