Bowrington Road Market (BRM) includes North and South
Blocks, two buildings of 4-storeys, including the basement. In between
these two blocks, it is Wan Chai Road (灣仔道). These two blocks are
connected by two overhead walkways.
The North Block is mainly market for wet & dried goods and a Root-top Children’s Playground, whereas the South Block wet market and cooked food centre called Bowrington Road Cooked Food Centre (鵝頸街市鵝頸熟食中心). The market was opened on 06 December 1979, this means it has a history of 35 years in 2014.

BRM is conveniently located, it is therefore crowded for the whole day, no matter whether it is the market for wet & dried goods, or the cooked food market. For the cooked food market, there are several very famed eateries, serving delectable Chinese food at reasonable price, like Chinese dishes, vegetarian stuffs, noodles and BBQ meat.
Please do not think BRM is only a government construction, there is nothing special. To me, it has signage in circular shape around the corner of the South Block. The two overhead walkways connected the two blocks is also not commonly found in other markets of similar kind. These two are the icons of BRM. Besides, on the ground floor, above the escalators and staircase, there is an artistic cylindrical roof, from which natural light can penetrate.
The cooked food centre
Bowrington in fact was the name of a Hong Kong Governor in the end of 1950s. The land in front of Happy Valley was reclaimed for urban development. At that time, Happy Valley was a field to grow rice. A canal was built to release the water from Wong Nai Chung (黃坭涌) into Victoria Harbour. Since the canal is narrow and long, it is like the neck of goose, this area in between Wan Chai and Causeway Bay is therefore called Goose Neck (鵝頸) and a bridge over the Canal near the tramway (The canal was covered later) is called Goose Neck Bridge (鵝頸橋).
