Under the balcony, people can still walk and do business in rainy days.
The rehabilitation project at 600-626 Shanghai Street (上海街600-626號) involves 14 blocks of old building, which were constructed in 1920-26 (10 blocks) and 1963-64 (4 blocks) respectively. The shop house cluster at Shanghai Street comprises 10 numbers
of veranda type per-war buildings, typical of streetscapes in old
Hong Kong streetscape.
81 family units and 170 persons are affected in the project. Total area is 1,128 square metres. It is graded as Grade II historic buildings in Hong Kong.
10 blocks were built before the Second War World.
In appearance, at about 90 years after construction, some blocks still look good, in 2014.
Veranda type per-war buildings
I guess these four blocks should be similar or the same in outlook originally. Please pay attention to the details of pillars, architects should have paid effort in the design in the past.
The green block should be the youngest one.
After the rehabilitation, it will become a dining area, like cha chaan teng, cafe or tea house.
This building cluster is not to far away from MTR Mongkok Station. After the rehabilitation, it should be welcome by citizens.
