Strange Root of Tree in Wong Chuk Hang 黃竹坑怪樹根

Near the bus stop at Aberdeen Sports Ground, there is a tree with its root growing in such a way.

Since the pavement is covered by bricks, each piece of brick is tightly in contact with the adjacent ones. But the tree would like to expand its root system. Apart from growing downwards, what it can do is to grow upwards. Since the bricks are packed tightly together, there is no more space among bricks for the root to grow. The result is that after several years, the root system can still squeeze some of its newly grown root between the limited space among bricks.

The root and bricks are competing with each others. The road surface is still 'flat'.

This is funny phenomenon between nature and civilization.

The address should be 68 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Aberdeen, Southern District.
