Kat
Hing Wai Walled Village (吉慶圍) was built about 500 years ago in Qing
Dynasty. Being a village of rectangular walled construction, it is a
very famous walled village in Yuen Long in the Hong Kong. To be exact,
Kat Hing Wai is located at Kam Tim.
In front of the village, it is the parking space for coaches.
Walls were needed to protect the inhabitants from bandits and rival
clans. In addition, there should be a "river" around the walled village
in the past.
The whole village is surrounded by wall of thickness 18 feet.
This is the main entrance and also the only entrance for the whole walled village.
An entrance fee of $3 is needed for charity purpose.
The metallic gate is still in good condition.
Let's start our tour in Kat Hing Wai.
This photo is taken in the afternoon.
The gate is an antique definitely.
We have to wait until there are not too many visitors.
The smooth stone surface is an evidence of being weathered in the course of time.
Several oldies (women only) are still wearing traditional clothes and
black hats. If you want to take photos with them, extra fee is a must.
Narrow passageway
Besides the walls, roof decorations are also special and artistic, and should not be missed.
By public transport, you should get off at MTR Kam Sheung Road Station.
It takes about eight minutes from Exit B to Kat Hing Wai. There is no need to take any transport or taxi.
