Hon Kee Bookstore is a retail shop in an alley next to Nelson Street, Mongkok. Hon Kee was run by Chiu's Family (趙氏), it was started by Mr. Chiu, the father of present shop runners, in about 50 years ago. In other words, Hon Kee has a history of about 50 years in Mongkok in 2014. In the past, Mr. Chiu sold books on wooden trolley, on which book shelves were placed to display and store books. In the past, there were not so many bookstores at the end of 1990s. www.isletforum.com There were several bookstores, like Hon Kee, in alleys in Mongkok to sell books, particularly text books no matter whether they are new and second handed books. Since Mongkok is a shopping area and easily accessible by different means of transport, small bookstores like Hon Kee can survive. Besides, Hon Kee can sell books at a lower price by giving a bit more discount to customers. But in recent years, publishers started to sell text books directly to students in schools, this greatly affects the business of Hon Kee. Some bookstores are no longer available now because of making no profit. Since Hon Kee is a family business, even though the business is not good recently, Chiu's family will continue to run the business.
