Sai
Wan 西環 (including Kennedy Town 堅尼地城, Shek Tong Tsui 石塘咀, Sai Ying Pun
西營盤) means the district west of Sheung Wan (上環) and east of Mount Davis
(摩星嶺), on Hong Kong Island. This was one of the earliest developed
districts of Hong Kong.
This
district is special because most streets are very slopy. Some of them
should have inclination of 40 degree. Such roads can only be connected
by small vehicles, but not double deckers. It is also because of this
reason, Sai Wan has not yet been developed as other districts in Hong
Kong. It has not been accessed by MTR in May 2013. In this connection, a
lot of peculiar constructions, buildings and shops can still be found
and kept in Sai Wan. You may have a visit one day to experience in
person how it has been developed up to 2013.
Eastern Street (東邊街)
The street in above four photos are Eastern Steet.
Methadone Clinic (美沙酮診所) is at the junction of High Street (高街) and Eastern Street (東邊街).
Ladder Street (樓梯街) is a cute and nice street in Sai Wan, connecting Caine Road (堅道) to Square Street (四方街) and Hollywood Road (荷李活道).
These
slopy streets are the distinguishing characteristic of Sai Wan. To walk
around in a leisure afternoon, with a break for snacks or afternoon
tea, we can fully experience the life of the dwellers here.
