The Old Mental Hospital (舊精神病院) is now no longer a mental hospital. It is located at No.2 High Street, Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong. But this address number is now named Sai Ying Pun Community Complex (西營盤社區綜合大樓) in Centamap.
Sai
Ying Pun Community Complex is a 9-storey building built on the site of
the Old Mental Hospital, of which only the granite north facade and
arched verandah were preserved. It is this verandah to be photoed and
highlighted.
The
Old Mental Hospital was built in 1892. It was originally quarters for
the European nursing staff before World War II. In 1947, after the war,
this location turned into a mental hospital until 1971.
Since this building was unoccupied for 20 years since 1971, tales of ghostly sightings were spread. Citizens named it "High Street Ghost House 高街鬼屋". This is always the base of rumours.
After
121 years, the construction can still be kept at exceptionally good
condition. I guess, after another 121 years, it will still erect as it
is now.
The construction should not be commonly known by the general public, because of its location on a steep slope.
It
is like to have passed through a time tunnel, to visit a buidling which
should not belong to the present era. Since its outlook is very
different from the buildings in Hong Kong and it is really worthwhile to
visit. If you pass by Sai Ying Pun next time, please allot a short time
to visit The Old Mental Hospital.
