Why do some people have diarrhea after eating raw oysters? Who should avoid eating oysters?
The Center for Food Safety explained that since oysters eat a large amount of seawater through filtration, if the water quality in the area where oysters are raised or harvested contains pathogens, they will accumulate in the oysters. Symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, headache and heart palpitations may occur after eating these problematic oysters.
The Center for Food Safety emphasizes that undercooked oysters are high-risk food.
Pregnant women, young children, the elderly, those with weakened immune systems and those with liver disease are more susceptible to infection and should avoid eating raw oysters.
