Will Hong Kong fish and chips rise in price with the UK?
The raw materials for British fish and chips, since about 40% of the cod comes from Russian waters, and about half of the sunflower oil is imported from Ukraine.
In one year, UK cod and haddock prices have risen by 75%, sunflower oil by 60% and flour by 40%.
The owner of a British restaurant pointed out that a fish and chips here was sold for 7.95 pounds in 2021, and it is now 9.5 pounds, an increase of about 20%. If it's all passed on to the diners, it will cost £11 per serving.
Will Hong Kong be similarly affected?
Basically, the impact is not too big, but the price will increase accordingly.
Why?
Most of the fish fillets used in Hong Kong are not cod, just low-grade catfish and sole fillets. The increase in cod prices will not have a big impact on these catfish and sole, which are not imported from Russia.
However, the merchants here will follow the price increase, and make every cent from the market.
